Overlord is an indie rock/pop song about money, power, greed and deceit and how it can corrupt an individual. This is an age old story that seems even more pertinent today.

The concept of greed resonates throughout the song as the protagonist always wants more money despite been very rich. Having amassed so much wealth the power that comes with it means the subject of the song believes themselves to be “above the law. Naturally they hide their nefarious activities and live life as a “smokescreen gangster”. This story may sound somewhat familiar!

James is a sad indie rock song primarily about regret over inaction to mend a relationship that breaks up slowly over time. This is encapsulated in the lines...

“Should have woken up long ago
Grasped the nettle and never let go
Disregard, led us down these sunless roads”

The track features an intricate bass line, energetic drums, melodic guitar, a swirling synth and a hybrid harp (a cross between a harp and a piano) playing motifs and solo's. Soaring above all this is the melancholic and haunting voice of Inês Rebelo.

Inês has written a beautiful piece about her experience of creating the "In Memoriam" EP and has made a dedication...

“This EP ended up speaking about grief: the darkness that arrives with loss and that gets mixed in with the long nights of winter. Part of the songs were sung before I had ever entered this darkness myself. I sang them by trying to empathise with those who had. Then life did that thing where it weaves strange, almost ironic, coincidences, and the songs materialised for me. However, having them brought me a great deal of comfort during this time: they gave me something beautiful to associate loss with. And for that, I’d like to dedicate these vocal performances to my nan and to my uncle. May you always live in the hearts of those who love you, and now too in these songs. I hope this EP brings that same comfort to others who might need it.”

“Francesca” is a poignant Dark Indie song about a woman whose previous socialite life has been eclipsed by the necessity of caring for her demanding and overbearing mother. Francesca feels trapped by duty and isolated from the world she once inhabited. She spends her time dreaming of returning to that lost life rather than making the most of her current situation. All of this takes a toll on her mental health leading to some outlandish behaviour. As time passes her beauty slowly fades which adds to her mental anguish “your fading beauty feeds your minds disease”.

Inês's exquisite, haunting vocals for this song are underpinned by the energetic bassline of Mel D and the tom tom rich drums of Matt Snowden. Holding things together are Danny's lush guitars and synth.

“Bad Guy” tells the story of a rich, handsome and attractive man whose suave exterior conceals a soul that finds its prime pleasure by “breaking hearts”. His hunting grounds are social gatherings where he draws in new victims with his magnetic charisma and attractiveness.

The track features a pulsating bass line, energetic drums and finger picked guitar. The dark, melancholic and sensual atmosphere created by these instruments reflects the character of its subject - the bad guy. It also reflects how the bad guy sees himself and how he tricks other people into seeing him.

A mellow and cheerful synth contrasts heavily with the darker instruments, providing the song with lighter undertones. They hint at an unmasking of the bad guy’s true character by ridiculing his behaviour. Accentuating this, Inês’ vocals project a calm, nonchalant vibe. They embody the role of a detached onlooker by softly narrating the events from an objective perspective.

Woven together, the mysterious electric strings, the aloof pop-y synth and the serene vocals create a lively Indie song that explores the bad guy archetype through opposing lenses.
